Job Purpose:

The underframe engineering manager is responsible for overseeing and directing the day-to-day engineering activities of the body structures team. Guiding the platform design to ensure it meets all relevant targets. Approving all prototype and production releases and subsequent engineering changes for body structure components on the platform.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead the day-to-day engineering activities of the body structures team (design and project engineers) reporting into them.
  • Guide the design of new components and modifications to existing components to maintain/improve the performance of the body structure whilst meeting the specific requirements of each vehicle platform and model year update.
  • Review change requests coming into the department and action within the team to resolve appropriately.
  • Review and approve initial release and subsequent engineering change release of all body structure components relating to the platform.
  • Review and approve/reject containment requests relating to body structure components.
  • Respond to change feasibility enquiries from vehicle line managers, concept package team, cost engineering team, manufacturing engineering team, launch team, current car engineering team and suppliers.
  • Plan and oversee component manufacturing feasibility studies and change requests ahead of initial production release.
  • Engage with the body CAE, safety and attribute teams to ensure vehicle performance targets are always met by the body structure design, proposing and implementing design changes where required.
  • Resolve design conflicts through cross-functional design reviews, escalating appropriately when a satisfactory compromise cannot be found.
  • Support all cross-functional design reviews, package reviews, attribute reviews and engineering milestone events etc.
  • Review and approve all engineering documents relating to the platform launch and each subsequent model year update (FESO, DVP, DFMEA, Lessons Learned, etc.)
  • Monitor and respond to DVP and legislative test results, proposing and implementing design changes where required and adapting the platform archetype accordingly to ensure evolving targets and requirements are continually met.
  • Carry out day-to-day personnel management responsibilities for the team of body structure design engineers and project engineers reporting into them (formal objectives / timesheets / holiday approval / 1:1’s / performance reviews etc.)
  • Report out to senior management on body structure design progression and performance as/when required.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Knowledge of automotive component manufacturing methods and associated design constraints.
  • Knowledge of aluminium joining techniques and associated design constraints.
  • Knowledge of body structures design and associated manufacturing constraints.
  • Previous experience of managing a team.
  • Knowledge of structural aluminium bonding.
  • Project planning.
  • Workload prioritization.
  • CAD design.
  • Engineering Degree.
