Lead Technician - SVO Paint

Aston Martin Lagonda | St Athan

At Aston Martin, craftsmanship, innovation and attention to detail combine to create some of the world's most desirable luxury vehicles. We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Lead Technician to join our Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) Paint team at our Gaydon manufacturing facility.

SVO Paint is responsible for the preparation, inspection, paint application and rectification of specialist, low-volume and customer-focused vehicle bodies and painted components. This is a unique opportunity to work on some of Aston Martin's most exclusive and bespoke vehicles, supporting the delivery of exceptional paint finishes that meet the highest quality standards.

As Lead Technician, you will support the Group Leader in the day-to-day coordination of SVO Paint activities, helping to ensure vehicles and components are inspected, prepared, painted, repaired and released in line with Aston Martin quality requirements. Acting as a technical expert within the team, you will provide hands-on support across all paint processes, including preparation, degreasing, adhesion promoter application, tacking off, spraying, rectification and final quality confirmation.

The role requires a strong focus on quality, safety and productivity. You will inspect vehicles and painted components to identify defects, support the correct application of Etch Primer, Primer, Base Coat and Clear Coat finishes, and ensure contaminants or defects are removed between paint stages. You will also be responsible for maintaining spray equipment, paint hoods, airlines and associated booth equipment, ensuring all activities are completed in accordance with established process controls and safety standards.

As the first point of technical support within the SVO Paint area, you will assist in resolving paint process concerns, quality issues and rework activities, while supporting containment and corrective actions where required. You will work closely with colleagues across Manufacturing Operations, including Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, Planning, Materials and Safety teams, as well as external contractors and suppliers where necessary.

A key aspect of the role is supporting the development of others. You will provide day-to-day coaching, guidance and technical leadership to Paint Technicians, helping to improve process consistency, quality performance and adherence to standard operating procedures. You will also contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, 5S activities, first-line maintenance and problem-solving projects across the department.

To be successful in this position, you will have significant experience within automotive paint operations, vehicle finishing, paint repair, preparation, spray booth environments or a similar manufacturing setting. You will possess a strong understanding of paint processes, quality standards, defect identification and prevention techniques, together with experience supporting productivity and quality targets in a fast-paced operational environment.

You will be able to demonstrate strong technical knowledge combined with excellent attention to detail, normal colour vision and the hand-eye coordination required to consistently achieve a flawless paint finish. Experience coaching or guiding fellow technicians, supporting issue resolution and working safely with paint materials, PPE and spray equipment is essential.

Previous experience in a Lead Technician, Senior Paint Technician or team coordination role would be highly advantageous, as would experience within specialist vehicle manufacturing, low-volume production, SVO environments, rectification, preparation, polishing or repair operations. Candidates with experience of operational systems, quality reporting tools, Lean manufacturing, 5S and continuous improvement methodologies will be particularly attractive.

A recognised apprenticeship, relevant skilled experience or demonstrable competence within automotive paint, refinishing, repair or preparation disciplines is required. Industry-recognised qualifications such as BTEC Vehicle Technology, City & Guilds Vehicle Body and Paint Operations qualifications, or IMI certifications in refinishing and vehicle body repair would be beneficial.

We are looking for an individual who is safety-focused, quality-driven and passionate about delivering outstanding results. You will be a proactive and accountable team player with excellent communication skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure and a commitment to maintaining Aston Martin's exceptional standards.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role within Aston Martin's Special Vehicle Operations team, contributing to the creation of some of the most distinctive and bespoke luxury vehicles in the world while developing your career within a world-renowned automotive brand.
