Senior Engineer, Manufacturing Engineering - Trim and Final

Job purpose

Join a team of Manufacturing Engineers responsible for both the Trim & Final and Vehicle Confirmation areas at St Athan. You will be responsible for ensuring the manufacturing process is safe, achieves quality, delivery and cost targets, and drives Manufacturing Excellence through continuous improvement, standardisation, waste reduction and best-practice implementation. The successful candidate will have experience of evaluating facility & tooling requirements, PFMEA & Process Control Plans, standardised process documentation, layout planning, problem resolution and line rebalancing and optimisation. You will ensure that the highest quality build standards are achieved whilst ensuring the health & safety of technicians is never compromised.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Plan and implement manufacturing processes that are safe and that achieve quality, delivery and cost targets, embedding Manufacturing Excellence through standardisation, waste elimination and continuous improvement.
  • Actively take part in Production Line Performance metric reviews, Value Stream Group meetings and Quality improvement activities to drive best practice and sustained manufacturing performance.
  • Responsible for the production and maintenance of detailed, process operation sheets to the correct standard.
  • Take part in Quality Planning Meetings to create and maintain PFMEA’s and control plans.
  • Drive a robust Manage the Change Process for the implementation of new and changed parts.
  • Facilitate work with the Manufacturing Business Office Engineers to identify and implement continuous improvement, efficiency and optimisation opportunities into the process.
  • Manage the selection of appropriate tools, jigs, fixtures and DC tools to ensure vehicle quality and hours per car targets, whilst ensuring operator safety targets are achieved.
  • Actively take part in in investigations that resolve complex Manufacturing Engineering related build issues, providing timely containments to ensure that product quality is not compromised, investigating root cause and countermeasure implementation.
  • Planning and implementation of volume driven line balancing activities.
  • Maintain engineering documents and records in compliance with legal and company requirements.

Experience and qualifications 

Essential experience and qualifications 

  • Qualified to HNC/Engineering Degree Level or already working towards an Engineering Degree.
  • The successful candidate will ideally have previous Manufacturing Engineering experience, with a good understanding of problem resolution and an ability to interrogate and interpret data.
  • CAD trained, ideally in Siemens NX or similar 3D CAD systems, with the ability to review and influence product and tooling designs.
  • Awareness of DC tooling selection, control and application within a manufacturing environment would be advantageous.
  • A willingness to adopt new ideas with an open mind to low volume constraints is essential.
  • Experience in automotive manufacturing environments would be ideal.
  • IT literate.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
