Attribute Lead Analysis Engineer - Durability and Reliability

Definition and delivery of the durability and reliability attribute for all Aston Martin vehicle derivatives

 

Job purpose

To perform durability analysis relating to the vehicle durability demand and duty cycles at vehicle, system and component level to provide the definition of the durability and reliability demand to support the delivery of high-performance vehicle test programmes.

The durability analysis engineer will be based at the Aston Martin facility in Gaydon and will be expected to travel occasionally overseas to support the needs of the business

 

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Definition, calculation, and revision management of durability and reliability duty cycles at vehicle, system and component level:
    • Project level durability targets (project reference duty cycles: mileage, manoeuvres, environmental conditions)
    • Full vehicle durability tests
    • Commodity team/system/component vehicle derived test profiles
    • Component / system duty cycles and load spectra, to define durability specs for structural design purposes
    • Drive files /duty cycles for component/system rig testing, in correlation with the real in-vehicle working conditions and the full vehicle fatigue targets.
  • Definition and calculation of durability coefficients to be used to evaluate the fatigue / damage of the vehicle components caused by the main relevant fatigue factors.
  • Calculation of the fatigue damage accumulated by the components during the durability tests
  • Set-up and execution of vehicle / systems simulations to define and calculate durability duty cycles
  • Customer data analysis (mileage, failures in service, etc.)
  • Periodical revision of the durability test cycles.
  • Set up and validation of component, system and vehicle instrumentation methodologies (i.e strain gauging, displacement transducers) for data acquisition
  • Durability analysis based on the data acquired during the durability testing, related to consumable items (brake wear, fuel and fluids consumption, tyre wear, etc.) and to the degradation of objective and subjective attributes of the vehicle.
  • Support issue resolution by providing analysis support to enable root cause definition and permanent corrective action for vehicle systems/components across the projects
  • Establish a stakeholder network within the commodity teams and business functions to drive the durability and reliability attribute and be recognised for issue resolution analysis and countermeasures definition/validation support

 

Experience and qualifications

Essential experience

  • A general knowledge in automotive systems is required
  • Experience with noise factor management and problem-solving methodologies
  • Experienced in Road Load Data acquisition (RLDa) and analysis methods
  • Must have excellent analytical skills, with experience in applying statistical analysis, reliability and durability analysis techniques
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python or other programming languages are required
  • Experience with the set-up and running of simulations is required.
  • Must be proficient with the use of all common Microsoft Office applications
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Preferred experience

  • Experience with data analysis / data acquisition software, including N-Code, CANape is an advantage
  • Familiarity with automotive data acquisition systems and diagnostic tools is an advantage
  • An ability to communicate complex ideas quickly and include component expertise in decision making
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions against conflicting requirements to deliver a balanced recommendation for the vehicle programme

Essential education/ qualifications

  • Engineering degree or equivalent

Preferred education/ qualifications

  • Conversant in statistical analysis methodologies (e.g. Six Sigma)

  • Must be well organised and methodical, with an excellent attention to detail
  • Able to work as an effective member of a team, while also confident to work alone
  • Can adapt quickly to become skilled with the use of new software
  • Must demonstrate a high level of self-motivation, initiative and flexibility, and determination to see a task through to completion
  • Able to remain focused under pressure
  • Must be fluent in the English language

 

Additional requirements 

L3 PG driving permit required to support durability definition and issue resolution
